Winter Carnival Without Snow?!

February 9, 2020

The Celebrate Southwick 250 committee meticulously planned a fun winter carnival months in advance.  The event was planned to be a capstone of the town’s 250th anniversary, family fun with a little history thrown in.  The only problem was when the committee planned events like sledding down the high school slope and snow sculpture back in July, no one could have predicted this relatively mild and snow-free winter weather.  What could the committee do on short notice to come up with a fun outdoor activity?   They turned to the New England Disc Golf Center!

Drew Gardner and course designer extraordinaire Chris Barden are cooking up a six hole temporary disc golf course just for the event.   The holes will be installed behind the Southwick High School parking lot and will take advantage of some elevation and vegetation to have a course that’s safe and appropriate for kids who have never played disc golf and will be a fun “Ace Run” for experienced players.  The holes will be between 75 feet and 150 feet.  The loop can be played in 20 to 30 minutes.

Drew and Chris will be giving free lessons and providing loaner discs throughout the day.  The NEDGC will also be awarding prizes of free passes to play the Meadows course in the spring and a giant plush bear and unicorn as “closest to the pin” prizes for kids 12 and under.

The Celebrate Southwick 250 Winter Carnival runs from 11 AM until 4 PM on Saturday, February 15. Admission is free.  In addition to disc golf, there will be  food trucks, indoor activities like a free-throw shooting contest, art events, and a Southwick Trivia game.
